Liberal Party of Canada

The Clear Grits of Upper Canada and the Parti Rouge of Lower Canada united both the English and French Canadian members to form the liberal party in 1861, making the party the oldest federal party in Canada. The first leader for the liberals was Alexander Mackenzie from March 1873 to April 1880. Alexander was chosen by the caucus along with the second and third leader chose Alexander. Edward Blake was the second leader for the liberals from May 1880-June 1887. The third leader was Wilfrid Laurier from June 1887-February 1919. The liberal party descended from the 19th century reformers who fought for a responsible government throughout British North America. The movement included George Brown, Robert Baldwin, William Lyon Mackenzie and many others.
Over the years the Liberal Party has achieved Universal Health Care, Bilingualism, Multiculturalism, National unit and the charter rights to freedom.
During and before the Second World War the liberal party shifted to the left and began to advocate a policy of social liberalism. Universal Healthcare, The Canadian Pension Plan and Student Loans were applied to the Canadian Policy under Lester B. Pearson, moving us towards a socialist ideal.
The current leader for the liberals is Justin Trudeau.
